"Ridiculously expensive", yet "worth the price"?

The question that appears as the title of this write-up has stemmed from the headline of an article published in the latest issue of a magazine. The article, the title suggested, promised to tell the readers about "5 Ridiculously Expensive Things That Are Worth Their Price". Now, a thing can be either worth its price or it can be ridiculously expensive. How can it be both? Perhaps the compiler wanted to suggest that these were costly items, ill-affordable, but justifiably so because of their quality and the reputation of the brand etc. One only wishes he or she had known that the use of "ridiculously" was lending the article itself to ridicule! Ironically, it is the magazine itself that turns out to be "ridiculously expensive", priced at Rs 100 per copy when most journals, printed inside the country, offer similar content at half the price! Perhaps, the publishers would try to defend themselves saying that their product is meant for people with fat purses and little time to read. Nevertheless, coming back to the starting point, this was yet another example of slipshod writing in general and slovenly use of words in particular.
Those involved in producing this article had lost sight of the simple fact that the headline would have been an eye-catcher even without the injudicious use of the adverb "ridiculously". If prefixing it with an adverb was at all necessary, the good old "highly" could have served the purpose. This is, however, just one example. Journals nowadays are replete with instances of words being put to use without much thought. The magazine referred to at the beginning of this write-up was the India edition of an internationally renowned journal. Another internationally-renowned journal, which unfortunately does not yet have a full-fledged India edition, seems to take immense delight in talking about the "ruling military government" in Myanmar, as if there could be a government in opposition too. Can there be a government that is not in power, or which, in other words, does not "rule"? What is the point in asserting that it is a "government" that is "ruling" as well?
When international publications are prone to such follies, how can our own journals, with their treasure trove of "Indianisms" lag behind? With annoying regularity, one gets to read about the "ruling BSP government in Uttar Pradesh" or the "ruling BJP government in Gujarat"? It has, perhaps, never occurred to the editorial staff of newspapers and magazines that a party can be called a ruling party only if it is in power! One wonders whether they are aware of the nuances like while talking about developments in the ruling party one ought to say "ruling BSP" or "ruling BJP" but when referring to the government itself, it has to be the "BSP/BJP government". Alternatively, "regime" could be used in place of "government". But saying "ruling" and "government" in the same breath makes no sense.
Another example of superfluous usage of adjectives comes to mind wherein a "tangle" is referred to and the reader is also additionally told that the tangle is "vexed" as well! Any discerning reader would remember having come across "vexed Kashmir tangle" and "vexed Ayodhya tangle". It does not require one to be a genius to understand that a tangle seizes to be a tangle if it seizes to be vexed! Hence we can have a "vexed issue" or simply a "tangle" but not a "vexed tangle".
There is a strong likelihood of some people getting rankled about this objection to improper use of adjectives and adverbs. "What is the fuss?", they might ask. However, in times when hopes for a better future are hinged in a large degree on advancements in communication technology, the basic element of communication - the word, written or spoken - can not be overlooked. Proper usage of words is not just for the purists' delight. It is essential to ensure that what one is saying does not lend itself to much misinterpretation. Misinterpretation can not be completely ruled out in any communication but judicious use of words can go a long way in reducing its possibility.

Journalism: Profession or Business?

This note emanates from an innocuous query from a friend who wanted to know in which of the two categories does journalism fall. The friend happens to be working in close collaboration with the media and wants to know the answer from those of us who are themselves a part of the fourth estate.
Any activity which requires some specific skill and is performed for remuneration can be called a profession. This leaves no doubt about journalism being a profession. It undoubtedly requires specific skills - the ability to separate the wheat from the chaff while dealing with heaps of seemingly unnecessary information and the knack of piecing together apparently unrelated bits of information and presenting these in a way that would make sense to a layman. Moreover, although it would be unfair to look down on journalists as a mercenary class, there can be no denying that few of us would like to continue with our jobs if we stop getting paid!
That leaves us with the question of the role of business in journalism. Business, a much-scorned term in societies with a feudal hangover, is an integral part of any human activity that is not aimed at charity. Journalism, as we know, can not be practised in a vacuum. Media organisations - newspapers, journals, TV channels etc.- are indispensable for any journalist who wants to practise his craft, be it as a full-time employee or a freelancer. Running these organisations require the four factors of production - land, labour, capital and enterprise. For this, business acumen becomes absolutely necessary. That is why media organisations are often owned by business houses. Where they are not, they usually have an indirect relationship with business by way of shareholding. These business houses may be profit-driven which may also get reflected in their handling of the media organisations as well. Nevertheless, this proves beyond doubt that journalism is essentially a profession which, however, needs the backing of business for its sustenance.
As a journalist, one can not help noticing the backdrop against which the query came. A lot of heat has been generated over the alleged involvement of some media big shots in a murky deal that has been hitting the headlines for quite some time. People who are unhappy over these happenings tend to say things like "journalism is no more a mission. These days it has become a business". That is a misleading explanation borne out of a sense of indignation. Journalism becomes a mission in societies facing huge crises. We saw it in India in the early 20th century when the struggle for independence was at its peak. We are again witnessing this in contemporary Pakistan, which is faced with a crisis of a different kind. Contemporary India, irrespective of what the prophets of doom may say, is not facing a crisis in the real sense of the word. There may be roadblocks that the nation, now on the rise, would definitely like to dispense with. When societies achieve a semblance of stability, the character of the press too undergoes a change. This has been witnessed world over and India is no exception.
The moral turpitude, which rightly fills us with disgust, has not arisen out of business-minded media organisations' yearning for profit. The rot has its roots in a consumerist culture makes people believe that happiness can be achieved by maximizing possessions. When one tends to seek fulfilment in luxuries and extravaganza, one is bound to make attempts for achieving these by whatever means possible. And consumerism pervades through all sections of the entire society of which journalists too are a part. To expect higher standards of probity from journalists alone may not be unfair would not be realistic either. There can be a large-scale rise or fall in the levels of morality in a society. There can also be individuals who may stand out because of their exceptionally high or low levels of morality. But there can not be a profession in which all the practitioners would have similar ethical concerns.

Wherefore this ingenious piece of interior decoration?

Friends, bloggers, countrymen! Lend me your eyeballs! I request you all to have a look at the image pasted here and help me, if you could, make sense of what appears to me unadulterated nonsense. Nobody would dispute that Barack Obama's India visit is a big story, to use the journalistic jargon. You may love, hate or be indifferent to the US, but you can not deny the significance of where its President goes and what he speaks. However, I am at once flummoxed as well as amused to note that this news channel, which promises its viewers to bring news at any cost, has chosen to splash a gigantic image of the American flag on the walls of its studio!!! I am not a jingoist and let me make it clear that I do not intend to express outrage at this act which may appear to the nationalists as an assault on the country's pride. But despite taking a neutral and brutally impersonal view of things, I am at loss to make out what these gentlemen are trying to convey by this ingenious piece of interior decoration. I am sure that these media professionals have enough knowledge of history to know that its economic imperialism notwithstanding, America has never tried to annex territories like all the major European powers did in past. I am also sure that they keep abreast of current affairs and hence know that in today's circumstances, colonization is virtually impossible. In that case, there could be no possibility of these esteemed newsmen acting in fear and anticipation of a possible capture of the Indian territory by the white nation led by its off-white President. Could it be some naive hope that the stripes-and-stars-clad rich daddy would indulge in some sort of fantastic charity and adopt the orphan draped in tricolour who has kept growing for half-a-century while refusing to grow up? I have no clue. If any one among you has, I shall be grateful if he or she takes the trouble to enlighten me.

मौजूदा प्रसंग में पुरानी शराब है हिंदी सिनेमा में अंडरवर्ल्ड का चित्रण और नया अंदाज़ है "Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai".

Six suspects: A dense plot and a racy narrative

Vikas Swarup is a consummate story-teller. The incestuous world of critics may take its time in coming out with a verdict on the literary stature of this career diplomat. But a layman, who reads for pleasure, would have no qualms in admitting that going through his works always turns out to be worth the time and money (if you happen to be those who believe in buying books rather than borrowing them).
Swarup's flair was evident in his debut novel itself.
"Q & A" was certainly a novel which you could like or dislike but certainly not ignore. It is a pity that the book faded into the oblivion after its rather inferior celluloid version "Slumdog Millionaire" took the world by storm.
In his second novel "Six Suspects", Swarup embarks upon a more ambitious task with a plot that is much more dense than that of Q & A. However, this has not been at the cost of raciness of the narrative which may well be Swarup's USP.
The novel revolves around the murder of Vicky Rai, son of a powerful politician, a quintessential spoilt brat whose misdeeds seem to be straight out of newspaper headlines. The guy has, in a life span of thirty-two years, courted controversy after controversy. Sample this: he gets killed at a party he has thrown to celebrate his acquittal in a murder case having an uncanny resemblance to Jessica Lal's killing. His other wrongdoings seem reproduction of the BMW hit-and-run case and Salman Khan's alleged hunting spree in  Rajasthan.
Six people, each of them carrying a gun, have been rounded up by people from the site of the murder (which explains the title of the novel).
The six suspects include Rai's father Jagannath, a mafia don-turned-politician, who believes in bending every rule and crossing every limit to achieve one's end. He decides to get his son bumped off, after getting some "enlightenment" from his disgraced spiritual guru, as the spoilt brat has become too much of a liability for him. However, it turns out that though implicated in the case, he was not actually responsible for the murder as the hitman hired for the purpose did not turn up. The other suspects include a famous film actress, for whom Vicky Rai had the hots, a petty slum-dwelling thief who looks forward to redeeming his life after falling in love with Rai's sister Ritu, a typically dumb American who had come to India to marry a desi girl only to learn that he has been duped, a retired IAS officer with a split personality that keeps him oscillating between his own debauched self and the acquired persona of "Gandhi baba" and lastly, a tribal from Andaman whom the police glibly declare to be a naxalite and hence the murderer of the rich Vicky and even kill in cold blood accusing him of trying to escape from custody.
Through the separate stories of these six suspects, Swarup takes through a roller-coaster ride of the India that we are too familiar with to sit back and take note.
The world of political intrigues gets quite an authentic depiction in the form of Jagannath Rai's manipulations. Equally gripping are the travails of the tribal Eketi, whose plight punctures the myth that Indians are a nation devoid of racial prejudice. The American Larry Page, who more often than not gets confused with the celebrated co-founder of Google, brings in a lot of humour through his own stupidities which are matched by the idiocies of those he gets to meet. However, the romance between the mobile thief Munna and Ritu Rai is a bit too fairy tale and much part of the actress Shabnam Saxena's story is just as credible as a Bollywood potboiler. UP wallahs (Swarup) happens to be one) may complain about certain discrepancies which are not expected from somebody familiar with the social fabric in the Hindi heartland. Shabnam, who has a Kayasth surname, is shown to be a resident of "Kurmitola". Jagannath Rai is depicted as a "Thakur" though it is rare to find people of the caste having the essentially Bhumihar surname. These inconsistencies notwithstanding, the novel is definitely enjoyable and anybody with a taste for thrillers shall go for it. If I were to give one reason for saying so, I would point out that it is not humanly possible to guess who actually killed Vicky Rai, before the author chooses to disclose it!
One hopes that the BBC, which is making a movie on the book, does justice to the suspense in the novel and does not end up doing a Danny Boyle - winning cinematic acclaim but killing the beauty of the book.

"Rocket Singh", much more than what the title suggests

"Rocket Singh -Salesman of the Year" is a deceptively titled gem. I call the title deceptive because it gives the impression of a laugh riot, a sort of comic fairy tale where the hero achieves success despite, or rather because of, his naivete and simplicity. There are sequences that evoke laughter, no doubt, but they hit you hard instead of tickling you. I feel compelled to commit the blasphemy of comparing director Shimit Amin with the likes of Hrishikesh Mukherjee and Basu Chatterjee. These maestros of yore had helped Hindi cinema beautifully bridge the gap between entertainment and realism. In his own way, with ample help from scriptwriter Jaideep Sahni, Amin reminds us of the giants of the 1970s and 1980s by telling a story wherein the Indian middle class makes an authentic comeback. It is ironical that the middle class, despite being the target audience, has rarely been portrayed realistically in movies of the recent past. Amin and Sahni, who had earlier collaborated to come out with the unconventional "Chak De India", have this time performed the miracle of portraying mundane characters and events with a remarkable freshness. They deserve praise for showing the courage to have as their protagonist a sardar, who is totally at variance with all the stereotypes of this community. He is neither a macho patriot, nor a buffoon mechanic or taxi driver nor a dimwit head of a family whose members seem to be competing with him in terms of stupidity. Harpreet Singh Bedi is a quintessential boy-next-door with ambitions and concerns all of us can relate to. He is gifted with no exceptional talents, but is, nevertheless, a man of courage and persistence and also a strong sense of ethics. Through his eyes, we get to see the corruption and depravity that pervades the corporate world, a worrying reality of our times, which has not found as much expression in our films as the other great social malady - political corruption. We get to see the ugly side of the much-extolled corporate ethics, which believes that end justifies the means. The end here refers to maximising profit and means range from bribery to jobbery. The distraught young man tries to blow the whistle and to his horror discovers that it was nothing short of a cardinal sin in the eyes of his employers. The distraught sardar is asked by his friends to change the job as he was too nice for the evil system. However, he displays a heroic resilience and refuses to give up. Realising that the evil was widespread and that mere change of job need not necessarily bring the elusive happiness to his life, he looks deep within and also takes a hard look at his surroundings. This makes him realise that even amidst the all-pervading cynicism, people do crave for sincerity, honesty and trustworthiness. He also gets to understand that the brutality of the system was in no small measure responsible for the unscrupulousness in their nature.
Armed with these two modern day noble truths, he ventures out to float a company of his own (surreptitiously, without resigning from his organisation). By virtue of the human touch reflective of the founder's own personality, "Rocket Sales Corp" starts giving the company, where all the turbaned gentleman and his companions continue to work, a run for its money. Their boss Puri, a ruthless and cunning go-getter, becomes desperate to finish off this unlikely rival. He finally gets on to find out what has been going right under his nose and blackmails Bedi into selling the company to him, with the promise that he himself and more importantly his supportive, yet hapless colleagues would be spared from legal action. However, Puri finds that his own cynical business acumen may have helped him take over Rocket Sales Corp., but the clients of this fancy-free company are not impressed as they keep complaining that the brand name may have remained but the character has been lost. Puri tries to trick Bedi to return to his company, but the young man does not fall into his trap and tells him that for him "business is about people and not merely profit". Puri concedes defeat and walks away but not without giving Rocket Sales Corp back to its creator. Thereafter, Bedi is shown making a new beginning, of course with the help of his colleagues whom he had helped reclaim their dignity and self-respect. Verbal description can hardly do justice to this gem of a movie which is marked by a great eye for details and very well etched out characters. This is of course, in addition to a brilliant script, fine direction and convincing performances from all the artistes who do full justice to their roles no matter how much footage they may have been given. The movie deserves to be watched by all, not just connoisseurs, as it convincingly shows that honesty and dignity are as relevant to our times as they were ever before.

The magic of 3 idiots

There is nothing new in movies being inspired from works of fiction. However, rarely do celluloid versions surpass the books on which they are based. 3 idiots is one such rare instance. Due apologies to Mr Chetan Bhagat who is already sulking over the insufficiency of the “credit” he has been given by the makers of the film. He is bound to cringe upon hearing that the movie has turned out to be even more riveting than his debut novel which, to be fair, was not an uninteresting piece at all. Leaving aside comparisons, one would add that dissimilarities between the movie and the novel far outnumber the similarities. It would not be an exaggeration to say that Rajkumar Hirani, who made no little impact with his “Munnabhai” series, has delivered what has so far been his best.

The movie is much more than a critique of Indian education system. It does criticize the system but does not tie itself into knots by suggesting an alternative model. It however, exhorts one to dare to be different. It encourages people to be, as the famous 1980s song had put it, “just a man and his will to survive”. The protagonist Rancho, played by Amir Khan, is a non-conformist but not a Hippie-style rebel. He has his own convictions and defends his friends’ right to have theirs. He is courageous enough to question and the pedantic style of his teacher in the classroom of his engineering college and irreverent enough to accost the boss of the institution whose rebuke drives a hapless student to suicide. His uniqueness does not make him a misfit. Instead, his malleability endears him to all and helps him survive the sniggers of those who disapprove of his ways. His ability to imagine and improvise helps him perform tasks that win the hearts of his worst critics and his most bitter rivals. His infectious vivacity rubs on his close friends who gather the courage to follow their hearts instead of treading the beaten track. He succeeds in convincing his friends, and the viewers as well, that if you tell yourself “all is well”, you get the courage to face your problems head-on even if not the ability to solve them. In an era when we, as Oscar Wilde had said “know the price of everything and the value of nothing”, he reaffirms the supremacy of “excellence” over “success”.

There is something magical about Hirani. He weaves a tale of improbabilities with an aplomb that compels the viewer to suspend disbelief. Can it be possible for a rich brat’s gardener to go to an engineering college bearing his name and getting a degree with that fake identity? Is it really possible to escape the humiliation of ragging by playing a nasty trick upon seniors hell bent upon bullying the freshers? Can one survive, let alone come out with flying colours, in an institute for four years after saying and doing everything that is close to the bone of teachers? There are many such episodes which appear absurd only when one has finished watching and is equipped with the wisdom of hindsight. The absurdities escape the incredulity of the viewer while the movie is being watched. And this is its biggest strength. Hirani did it in “Munnabhai MBBS” which saw the protagonist infusing life, and hence compassion as well, into a medical college and hospital in a way that was too silly to be true. He has repeated the magic with even greater success. Full marks to Mr Amir Khan who has played a character half his age with the conviction that only he is capable of. Compared with Khan’s act, how incongruous Rajendra Kumar and Jeetendra were when they played college-going characters in their hey day. Efforts of Madhavan and Sharman Joshi too need to be acknowledged. They were not playing their age either. They have got into their roles without displaying the frustration that comes while playing second fiddle to a more celebrated co-star. Omi Vaidya is a really good find while Boman Irani once again demonstrates his finesse at playing ruthless eccentricity. Dialogues are brilliant for which Hirani shares the credit with Abhijat Joshi. The musical score may not be of the best quality but Swanand Kirkire truly deserves a pat on his back for so beautifully capturing the various moods of the film, especially “give me some sunshine” and “behti hawa sa thaa wo”. Those who have not yet watched it are missing something of real value. So hurry!
